Successful cultivation of Darlingtonia californica in a hot climate via root zone chilling
نویسندگان
چکیده
Maintenance of consistent cool root zone temperatures is the factor most critical for successful Darlingtonia californica cultivation. plants grown semi-hydroponically with chilled water will tolerate ambient substantially warmer those conventionally.

Bacteria facilitate prey retention by the pitcher plant Darlingtonia californica.
Bacteria are hypothesized to provide a variety of beneficial functions to plants. Many carnivorous pitcher plants, for example, rely on bacteria for digestion of captured prey. This bacterial community may also be responsible for the low surface tensions commonly observed in pitcher plant digestive fluids, which might facilitate prey capture. I tested this hypothesis by comparing the physical p...
متن کاملSubsurface imaging of vegetation, climate, and root-zone moisture interactions
[1] Changes in global climate and land use affect important processes from evapotranspiration and groundwater recharge to carbon storage and biochemical cycling. Near surface soil moisture is pivotal to understand the consequences of these changes. However, the dynamic interactions between vegetation and soil moisture remain largely unresolved because it is difficult to monitor and quantify sub...
متن کاملImpact of Climate Change on Outdoor Thermal Comfort and Health in Tropical Wet and Hot Zone (Douala), Cameroon
Abstract Background and purpose:Climate change has an important role on the health and productivity of the occupant of the building. The objective of this study is to estimate the effects of climate change on thermal comfort in hot and wet areas, as in the case of the city of Douala. Materials and Methods:The general circulation model (CSMK3 Model, Scenario B1) was adopted for this purpose.Outd...
متن کاملChilling damage in a changing climate in coastal landscapes of the subtropical zone: a case study from south Florida
Freeze events significantly influence landscape structure and community composition along subtropical coastlines. This is particularly true in south Florida, where such disturbances have historically contributed to patch diversity within the mangrove forest, and have played a part in limiting its inland transgression. With projected increases in mean global temperatures, such instances are like...
متن کاملThe cost of carnivory for Darlingtonia californica (Sarraceniaceae): evidence from relationships among leaf traits.
Scaling relationships among photosynthetic rate, foliar nutrient concentration, and leaf mass per unit area (LMA) have been observed for a broad range of plants. Leaf traits of the carnivorous pitcher plant Darlingtonia californica, endemic to southern Oregon and northern California, USA, differ substantially from the predictions of these general scaling relationships; net photosynthetic rates ...
